INCREASE OF EXPORT DUTIES FOR UNPROCESSED WOOD FROM RUSSIA IS CANCELLED

Increase of import duties 

for unprocessed wood from Russia up to "prohibitive" level, that was supposed to happen on January 1, 2011, is canceled (or minimum delayed for a year). It was announced by the Chairman of the Government of Russian Federation Putin V.V. at the press-conference after the meeting with the Prime Minister of Finland Kiviniemi M. that took place on December 2010.

The increase of export duties for unprocessed wood up to "prohibitive" level (that makes the export of round wood unprofitable in most cases) was first planned from January 1, 2009, then from January 1, 2010, then from January 1, 2011, the Government made corresponding decisions, but finally putting these decisions into practice was delayed. The last decision was made in December 2010. According to regulation of the Government of Russian Federation dated December 23, 2009 No. 1071 export duties for unprocessed wood of conifer and aspen also unprocessed birch wood with diameter more than 15 cm were planned to increase by 80% but not more than 50 euro per cubic meter since January 1, 2011. Today export duties for unprocessed wood of conifer including birch wood with diameter more than 15 cm amount 25%, but not less than 15 euro per cubic meter, and 10% for aspen but not less than 5 euro.
